Old Friends and Fish Tales

While a photo isn't available, Michael Kent Plambeck fishing with old friends is the best.

Michael Kent Plambeck, a seasoned angler with a penchant for adventure, recently embarked on a memorable deep-sea fishing trip with his childhood buddies Tom, Bill, and Pat.

This trip, years in the making, was not just about fishing but about reliving old memories and creating new ones. They chose the Gulf of Mexico as their destination, specifically an area known as "the lumps," which promised an abundance of fish and a challenge to match their skills.

The lumps, a renowned fishing hotspot near Venice, Louisiana, are submerged geological formations that rise from the seafloor, creating an underwater landscape that attracts a variety of fish species. These formations are particularly famous for attracting large schools of tuna, making them a magnet for both amateur and professional fishermen. The nutrient-rich waters around the lumps are teeming with life, offering a veritable feast for predatory fish and, by extension, the anglers who seek them.

The four friends set off at dawn on a charter boat from the Mexican Fishing Company, a well-regarded outfit known for its experienced crews and well-equipped vessels. The anticipation was palpable as the boat cut through the early morning mist, the first rays of sunlight dancing on the waves. The promise of a bountiful catch and the thrill of the chase had everyone in high spirits, despite the lingering effects of the previous night's whiskey-fueled camaraderie.

As the boat reached the fishing grounds, the friends marveled at the sight of the lumps. The water was alive with activity, schools of fish breaking the surface and seabirds diving for their breakfast. The crew prepared the gear, and soon the lines were cast into the deep blue waters. It didn't take long for the first bite, a sign that the day's adventure was truly underway.

Michael, an experienced fisherman, was the first to reel in a tuna. The fish put up a formidable fight, testing his strength and skill. But with determination and a bit of luck, he managed to haul it aboard, a 12-pound beauty that set the tone for the day. The cheers and laughter that followed were a testament to the camaraderie that had always defined their friendship.

Tom and Bill, however, were not faring as well. They had skipped their Dramamine, and the rolling waves were starting to take their toll. The combination of a late night and the choppy sea was proving to be a challenging mix. Despite their discomfort, they soldiered on, determined not to miss out on the action.

Pat, ever the steady hand, managed to land a 25-pound tuna, a catch that drew admiration from the crew and his friends alike. The hours passed quickly as the group continued to pull in fish after fish, each catch adding to the growing pile of tuna on the deck. By mid-morning, they had landed 14 tunas, ranging from 12 to 45 pounds. It was an impressive haul, a testament to their persistence and the rich fishing grounds of the lumps.

As the sun climbed higher in the sky, the weather began to change. Dark clouds gathered on the horizon, and the wind picked up, bringing with it the ominous rumble of distant thunder. The captain, a seasoned mariner with years of experience, made the call to head back to shore. Safety always came first, and no catch was worth risking their lives.

The journey back was a rough one, the boat pitching and rolling as the storm closed in. Tom and Bill, already struggling with seasickness, found the return trip even more challenging. But they were buoyed by the camaraderie of their friends and the shared sense of accomplishment. They had come seeking adventure, and they had found it in spades.

Back on shore, the friends unloaded their catch, marveling at the size and number of tunas they had managed to bring in. The trip may have been cut short, but it had been a resounding success, nonetheless. As they divided the fish and reminisced about the day's events, they knew this was a trip they would remember for years to come.

Michael Kent Plambeck and his friends had ventured into the Gulf of Mexico seeking more than just fish. They had sought to rekindle the bonds of friendship forged in their youth, to test their skills against the formidable creatures of the deep, and to create memories that would last a lifetime. In every respect, their trip to the lumps had been a resounding success, a testament to the enduring power of friendship and the allure of the open sea.

There’s nothing quite like the joy of watching your child excel in something they’re passionate about. On October 29th, I watched with pride as my son, Preston Plambeck, took to the field with Inter Miami CF Academy, delivering an unforgettable performance in their latest match. The team triumphed with a commanding 5-1 victory, and Preston played a pivotal role, contributing two crucial assists that set the tone for the match. This was a remarkable game, and for me, it was a reminder of how far Preston has come.

This was the ninth game of the season, and Inter Miami has continued to impress with their focus and skill. The win brings their record to six wins, two losses, and one draw—an impressive feat considering the caliber of competition in the Florida-South Division. With five games remaining in the season, the team sits comfortably in first place among 14 teams, a testament to their hard work and dedication.

Watching Preston start and play through the game reminded me of the hours he’s dedicated to his craft. He’s been honing his skills, always striving to be better, and this season, he’s been rewarded for his efforts. Not only is he listed as one of the team’s top scorers, but he’s also become an indispensable part of the team’s strategy, setting up plays and showing incredible vision on the field. Assisting on those first two goals showcased not only his skill but his teamwork and understanding of the game—a joy for any soccer fan to witness.

As I watched Inter Miami’s impressive display, I couldn’t help but notice how the team has grown over the course of the season. The early games showed promise, but these last two wins have been particularly impressive as the team has begun to truly sync. Their communication on the field has improved remarkably, with players anticipating each other’s movements and playing with a level of confidence that only comes from shared experience. It’s clear that they’ve been working hard to improve their passing game, and the results are evident in these recent dominant victories.

Preston and his teammates have formed a bond that’s becoming stronger with every game, and it’s been amazing to see their commitment to each other and to their shared goal of a successful season. Watching them at the top of the standings is not just a proud moment for us parents but a reward for all the effort these young athletes put in week after week. Every victory and every assist counts as they strive for excellence, and they’re showing that they’re a force to be reckoned with in the league.

With five games left in the season, we’re hopeful for continued success. There’s no guarantee of what’s to come, but one thing is certain: Preston and his teammates will give their all to keep that top spot. I’ll be there cheering him on, supporting him every step of the way, and celebrating not only his achievements but also the dedication and love he brings to the game.
